Submission on: Identifying Long-term Visions (Whanganui FMU)

The Whanganui Province of Federated Farmers (Federated Farmers) welcomes the chance to submit on Horizons Regional Councils long-term visions for the Whanganui Freshwater Management Unit (FMU). We acknowledge any submissions made by individual members of Federated Farmers.

The Whanganui River holds the distinction of being recognised as an exceptional natural feature/landscape in both the Horizons One Plan and the Ruapehu District Plan. In Schedule G of the Horizons One Plan, the river is acknowledged for its remarkable visual and scenic characteristics, ecological importance, intrinsic value, significance to Tangata Whenua (the local Māori people), recreational appeal, and the established protection it receives through the Whanganui National Park. Similarly, Chapter NL2 of the Ruapehu District Plan designates the Whanganui River as an outstanding natural feature/landscape, attributing this status to its captivating gorge landscapes, ecological significance arising from the presence of original forest remnants, cultural significance to Tangata Whenua, and the recreational opportunities provided by its waters, riparian margins, and rock formations.
