Long term visions and values for each of Horizons Freshwater Management Units and the overarching objective

Federated Farmers' Manawatu-Rangitikei, Ruapehu, Whanganui and Tararua Provinces have submitted on Horizons Regional Council's recent consultation on draft objectives for freshwater.

We urge the Council to adopt a balanced approach for managing freshwater that recognises significant values of freshwater for primary production, including in supporting food security. This is especially important in the face of increasing disruptive events associated with climate change.

Water availability, soil health, cost-effectiveness, flexibility, collaboration, local knowledge, and multiple use should be included as regional values. Outcomes should be stated in simple terms as far as possible in order to avoid ambiguities in interpretation triggering litigation.
