Submission on Developing an exception from the low slope map for lower intensity farming

Challenges with the low slope map arise from a poor correlation between slope and the environmental impacts of agriculture. The slope of land does not capture or appropriately define the intensity of land use. Climate, landscapes, and livestock systems across Otago are incredibly diverse, areas within a farming system can be ‘intensive’. Otago Federated Farmers believe that any approach taken needs to consider the fundamental role that different livestock classes can play balancing sensitive ecosystems.

In our submission we have tried to consider the range of farming systems across the Otago region and how they operate with the many variables and pressures they are trying to manage.
